The Kharaa crisis
The Kharaa Bacterium — the same alien pathogen central to the original Subnautica's plot — has spread aggressively across the Ariadne Arm, the region of space humanity has colonised. It produces mutated xenoforms and threatens to overwhelm human settlements. Faced with a slow-motion extinction event, the megacorporation Alterra launches an evacuation.
The Pioneer Program
Alterra's answer is the Pioneer Program: a mass colonisation drive selling roughly 40,000 colonists a one-way ticket to safety. The advertised destination is Zizera, marketed as a "desert oasis" — a clean, dry, Kharaa-free world. The player is one of those colonists, lured aboard by the now-infamous teaser line:
"When you wake up, your new life begins."
The journey is meant to be a 14-year stasis flight aboard the colony ship Cicada.
The wrong system
The Cicada never reaches Zizera. An unscheduled Phase Gate transit dumps the ship at the M05 binary system — nowhere near its intended destination. The ship breaks apart entering the atmosphere of an unmapped ocean moon, scattering wreckage, colonists and cargo across the seabed below.
You wake up underwater, on a world that was never on the brochure. The shattered hull of the Cicada Wreck becomes your first objective — and the thread you pull to uncover why the ship was diverted, what happened to the other colonists, and what is waiting at the planet's core.
Proteus, the ocean moon
The new world — referred to as Proteus — is an entirely separate planet from the original Subnautica's 4546B and from Below Zero's setting. That means a completely fresh ecosystem: no carried-over Leviathans, a new biome stack, and new lore to excavate. The descent runs from the sunlit Starting Shallows down through reefs and canyons to the Abyssal Trench and, ultimately, the Titan-class World Tree at its heart.
The CICADA and its AI
The CICADA is a massive colony vessel carrying roughly 40,000 colonists on an approximately 14-year cryosleep voyage — vastly larger than the original game's Aurora. Mid-voyage, the ship's AI (referred to as the Noetic Advisor) intercepted an unknown signal, redirected course against its handlers, performed an unscheduled phase jump, was caught in a gas giant's gravity, and broke apart in Proteus's atmosphere. A central mystery drives the story: why was the AI so determined to continue the mission "at any cost"? The signal's origin and nature are deliberately left unexplained at Early Access.
Voices from Beyond (audio drama)
The official five-episode pre-release audio drama Voices from Beyond establishes the backstory: Ep. 1 "Don't Fear" (references original protagonist Riley Robinson as a public hero), Ep. 2 "Dreamers" (the outbreak triggers political crisis and mass evacuation), Ep. 3 "Pioneer" (the pathogen mutates; martial law spreads), Ep. 4 "Lost" (the colony ship is declared missing), and Ep. 5 "Mayday" (a distress call reveals the phase-gate disaster and ocean-moon crash). Named characters include the rancher Hana, her daughter Boo, and Riley Robinson.
Crew & colonists (story archives)
Discoverable content includes Audiologs, Black Boxes (postmortem records with bios and death circumstances) and Investigation Files. Named CICADA crew / Pioneers include survival specialist Rauli "Iso" Isotalo, lead pilots "Ruby" Erdene and Anar, lead diver Zygimantis "Mantis" Tyrvydas, colony surgeon Sophie "Butcher" Boucher (the most-referenced character), plus Ganzo, Nahema, purser Anita and cook Tuba.
The Kharaa Bacterium / "the Blight"
After 2183, a previously unknown form of Kharaa was unearthed in a mining facility in the Ariadne Arm named Neo-Caligo. The first recorded outbreak occurred in a colony on the moon Freya IV; quarantine protocols were ignored amid panic and fleeing miners spread it. Symptoms include persistent coughing, sneezing and skin cysts, and it produces mutated xenomorphs. This outbreak — "the Blight" — is the catalyst for the Pioneer Program.
Tone & structure
Subnautica 2 keeps the series' signature loop of fear-driven discovery: a silent protagonist, environmental and audio-log storytelling, and a narrative gated behind exploration depth rather than cutscenes. The story is being delivered incrementally through Early Access, so the full arc — including the World Tree's role — unfolds as the game develops.
